Van Meer

An inexperienced, insecure, and simple-minded young captain who believes that a successful middle passage will secure his ticket into English aristocracy by marrying Maureen.

Maureen

An innocent, bold yet courageous aristocrat and sister of Van Meer's best friend. She responds to Van Meer's proposal. Her refreshing personality and musical grandeur captivates Van Meer from the very first moment. She follows life like a river follows its riverbed.

 

Staarmer

A much hated, ascetic slave trader, frozen through severe penance, he indulges in sadistic voyeurism and delights in the suffering of the slaves.

He speaks little, but when he does, it's chilling.

 

Magron

In a dingy office full of rats, the arrogant, greedy Frenchman Manuel Magron sits in front of a massive safe. He likes to double-check his calculations to ensure success, and makes a fortune from the slave trade. His favorite book is Niccolo Machiavelli's “The Prince”.

The devious first mate, an expirienced opportunist of the worst kind, only concerned with his own advantage. He serves whoever pays the most. Without Van Meer, his share of the profits increases.

 

Djembe

A young Fulani with a powerful stature, proud, ambitious, stubborn, and prone to boasting. His short hair and reddish-colored cotton apron belie his ambition to always be the best and strongest. 

As soon as he moves, you know you're dealing with a leopard.

 

Umbala

A small, very emotional girl on the threshold of womanhood, calming and driven by her deep emotions, which she follows unfiltered. She is going to marry Djembe.

 

Zinu

Her self-appointed rival. Tall, slender, and somewhat sinister in her demeanor and aura, her face bears Ethiopian features and her neck a leather necklace with a lion's claw. She wants to possess Djembe at all costs.

 

Kaluloo

The black magician, whose face is barely recognizable, covered by dark masks and furs with bones and horns on his head. Ritual scars all over his body testify to his importance as a master of the dark worlds and Van Meers nightmare. He uses these to manipulate people and turn them into his subjects. 

 

The rest is hidden deep down in the frozen hearts of people, in the offices of capital and insurance companies, and in the horrific belly of the slave ship Il Mondo.
